The genesis of “Manhole” forges my construction past and my medium to produce a piece of art that is a reflection of the organic qualities of concrete brought to a surprising level of sophistication. “Manhole” has an undercurrent of deep concern for our environment. The smooth surface of the concrete belies the corrosive erosion hidden from view. The glass is representative of pristine waters being compromised beyond repair. The element of illumination casts an ethereal glow. The inconvenient truth is that our infrastructures are failing and we are heedlessly dumping toxins in our waterways. Astonishingly, the number of people around the world dying from untreated waste is near the number of people killed in all major wars combined.
